Board of Directors - South Florida
John Jarvie
President
Born and raised in San Diego, California, John Jarvie has had a connection with the ocean his entire life. Before he could walk, John spent weekends aboard his Grandfather's 65" CT Ketch and his father's 68" Bertram.
John left California to play Division I soccer and study business in Washington D.C. John is still such a football (soccer) fanatic that he travels to the World Cup every 4 years, having been in Germany (2006) and South Africa (2010) and is looking forward to Brazil in 2014. While at University, he also minored in Music and became proficient at several instruments including the guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, ukulele, piano, and melodica.
After graduating, John anxiously moved back to San Diego to become the 4th generation of his family to work at Oversea Yacht Insurance. He helped his father expand the company throughout the west coast, as well as opening an office location in Kona, Hawaii.
When John realized the potential to seize an opportunity in 2009, he moved to Fort Lauderdale overnight to open the Bahia Mar office as Vice President of Oversea. John joined Young Professionals in Yachting at the start of their 2nd year, and immediately appreciated the personal and corporate benefits that YPY offered. He served as Vice President of YPY for a year and then stepped in as President to continue growing the organization.
Since his Presidency, the organization has grown from 40 to 100 members with divisions in South Florida and Monaco. "We are the future of yachting...the ultimate goal is to create an International network to support and connect all young professionals in yachting, while continuing to teach and promote honesty, ethics, and good business practices" . John is excited to see the growth and positive changes that have taken place in the last year, and looks forward to the future success and growth of the organization.

Sarah Poland
Treasurer
I was born and raised in central Ohio. After graduating from The Ohio State University in Interior Design, I moved to Chicago to pursue my career in design, and to chase after greater opportunities. For 2 years, I worked at Crate & Barrel as a department manager/store designer.
I had a wonderful opportunity to move to Germany for 6 months; so, being the risk-taker that I am and having a passion for traveling, I made the move to Bonn, Germany. During my 6 month stay, I took a German language course and traveled all around Europe. Later, I moved to Miami.
I started working with a company, Baldwin Yacht Interiors, as an Interior Designer. This is where I fell in love with the yacht industry, and where I felt I had finally found my niche. Working with Baldwin Yacht Interiors gave me great experience, and gave me the opportunity to move forward in my next job at StellarPM as an Interior Coordinator.
My role at StellarPM was to manage the interiors during refits, and to offer any interior design services to the client if they had not already been appointed one. I also had the chance to dabble in the sales department, meeting with the local brokers, captains and other potential clients in the industry.
I am now a Yacht Manager for Hill Robinson USA, where I am learning a completely different side of the industry. My roles are offering support for the captains and crew, assisting in refits, and tracking our vessels class and flag certifications. After taking a course at MPT, I am now learning the ISM (International Safety Management) of our vessels.

Peter Murray
Secretary
I am half Scottish, half Corsican and was fortunate enough to be born on one of the most beautiful shores of the Mediterranean, in Monaco. My father hand built my first boat on our balcony when I was four years old (it was an Optimist named "Henry"), and since then I have enjoyed sailing along the beautiful Côte d'Azur on various boats as well as in Devon and on the Solway Firth in Scotland.
I began working in yacht sales, charter and yacht management in 2005, under the wing of senior broker James Munn (currently with Fraser Yachts), in what was to become Ocean Independence. I had had several experiences where my Clients would not buy the yachts they wanted due to the impossibility of finding a "home" for them. It was frustrating for them and for me. Using my local knowledge of the area, I dug into the problem to solve the issue and realised how complex it was for everyone.
In 2007, I joined Inwards Marine, one of the leading "berth brokerage" companies, and specialised in this field to the extent that some gave me the nickname of "Mr. Berth". After years of successful business in this sector, I realised that the lack of transparency and efficiency, as well as unethical practices made possible in this market, was a limiting factor for the overall growth of the industry. We needed more efficient tools to buy or to sell berths with greater transparency.
In mid-2012, my answer was to start creating MooringSpot.com, which is an online database of ports and berths which yacht owners and yacht brokers can use as a better tool to buy and sell berths in accordance with a Code of Ethics, which resembles those that are in place throughout the rest of the industry.
I believe the future generations of yachting professionals have great challenges ahead of them. They have much to learn from their elders and they will also need to be innovative to resolve issues which can only grow in our industry. Every summer now, I see a dark mask of pollution along the horizon at sunset, which was not there when I was a child. I feel we all need to resolve this. I also find that in a more interconnected world, Clients need brokers less and less as "go-betweens" but more for their expertise and the value they bring. I feel we all need to improve on this.

The association also hosts sponsored social events for networking opportunities.
Revenues from YPY fundraising activities will benefit local charities such as the Freedom Waters Foundation, which provides boating opportunities and marine related education for people with disabilities and youth at risk,AMI Kids, providing a brighter future for those with a troubled past, and Kids in Distress, which helps preserve families and aide with child abuse.
YPY members regularly act as volunteers for the International Seakeepers Society, and are also involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which enables young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
Membership is limited to land-based business professionals within the yachting industry between the ages of 21 and 35. If a member has joined prior to age 35, they are permitted to remain in the organization until age 40.
"The goal is to provide young professionals with a comfortable and educational environment which nurtures those who aspire to learn, succeed and secure the professional and ethical future of the yachting industry."

2nd Annual Spin-A-Thon to Benefit Kids In Distress (KID)
The marine industry rides in support of the prevention of child abuse and neglect for all our community’s children on July 16th at the Zoo Health Club on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. This marks the 2nd year for the Spin-A-Thon which aims to raise awareness and funding. 100% of the proceeds directly benefit KID, a leading force and authority in prevention of child abuse, preservation of families, and treatment of children who have been abused and neglected. With a vision of “A Community of Safe and Healthy Children in Loving Families,” KID is responsive to the growing and ever-changing needs of the community, last year serving more than 6,500 children and their families. The Spin-A-Thon is organized and underwritten by The Triton Newspaper, MHG Marine Benefits, IMA Yachts, Rob Price Services and The Zoo Health Club. The event takes place on Friday, July 16th with 360 minutes of spinning from 1-7 p.m. followed by a networking cocktail party from 5-9 p.m. The race results will be unveiled at this time and there will be 'hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and a raffle. Each participating marine company is assembling a team of enthusiastic cyclists. The teams pay an entrance fee and the individual team members are tasked with raising donations from friends, family and business associates. The final goal- raise $50,000 for Kids In Distress. With your support, we can change children’s lives. "After such a successful 1st year, we are looking to challenge the maritime community to get involved in this event and help ensure a brighter future for children who need hope restored in their lives," said Peter Hult, vice president of MHG Marine Benefits. For over 30 years KID has provided a safe and often permanent place for children in the community when they have had nowhere to turn. KID’s efforts over the years have truly impacted many of South Florida’s children and families and the marine industry is proud to raise awareness and support for such a worthy cause. “It is amazing to me how much care and dedication this group has toward the children we serve. In today’s turbulent times, we are incredibly grateful to have such notable industry leaders in our corner. The children we care for are the responsibility of our entire community and the money raised through the Spin-A-Thon will directly and positively impact many young children’s lives,” advised Lea Kuhry, Special Events Manager, KID. www.spinathon.kintera.org
